COOL STUFF:
by Alex Cuervo and Dr. Nefarious
Paradox Press: The "Big" Books
These really are incredible. An entire series of illustrated (by some of
the coolest folks in "the Biz") books covering some of the most
fascinating topics around. Choose from "Death", "Urban Legends"
(our collective favorite), "Conspiracies", or "Weirdo's".
Available at finer comic shops everywhere.
Sony Playstation
Fuck Sega! This bad boy is the undisputed king of the "next generation
video game console" hill. 32 bits of screaming terror, guaranteed to
convert even the stuffiest of non-gamers to absolute geek-dom. While the
really good games are only barely starting to trickle out, the anticipation
of playing titles like Dark Stalkers, Loaded, Resident Evil, Snatcher, and
NHL Hockey for months on end, in the privacy of my own home, has me grinding
my teeth into chalk dust. Battle Arena Toshinden is such an amazing fighting
game, it has almost paid for the hefty $300.00 price tag in quarters saved,
had it been an arcade game instead. Jumping Flash is great too! What are
you waiting for, go check this thing out.
Big Guy and Rusty the Robot
Frank Miller and Geoff Darrow re-unite to give use one of the most delightfully
oddball duos in recent history. Visually stunning (as if you could expect
less from Darrow), and lots and lots of fun. If you like robots, larger
than life monsters, wrecked cities, and two-fisted adventure, go harrass
your local comic book shop owner for issues of this masterpiece.
The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb
This is such a twisted flick. Picture "Eraserhead" executed by
the Brothers Quay, and you get the basic idea. The interaction between the
claymation characters, and the humans is unbelieveably well done. Even the
people in this were filmed in stop motion, giving the most basic human gestures
this totally disturbing quality. The laboratory scene is one of the most
intense and creepy claymation sequences I've ever seen. Available through
Manga Video.
Murder Can Be Fun
Johnny Marr is one of my favorite writers. He covers just about every aspect
of murder and mayhem imaginable in a dry, intelligent, and incredibly witty
fashion. If you live in a larger city, there should be an "alternative"
bookstore of some sort, where you can score a copy of this essential pub.
If not, try Atomic Books (see "Stinky Links"), Last Gasp, or See
Hear to mail order it.
